Actually reaching the gates that lead into Volterra is no easy task. Much hiking is required- miles along steep mountain paths that could almost be described as a labyrinth, for a single wrong turn along one of the many paths could get one lost for hours, possibly days in the mountains. Many of these pathways will lead through caves, which also can branch off into their own paths, possibly leading one to wander aimlessly in the darkness for an unstated amount of time.
Of course, the residents of Volterra can navigate these twists and turns as if skipping through their own backyard.
Typically there are Volturi patrolling these paths, should some poor soul get lost, or should an ally need escorting to the village. The closer one becomes to the village, the more likely they are to spot one of the masked Rouges.
The gate of the village itself is built into the side of the mountain, crafted out of the finest stone that would take one hell of an attack to demolish. Needless to say, entering the gate by force is highly unlikely. Should one manage to get through the gate, they’d be greeted with the inside of a cave, and yet another slope that needed to be hiked. However, as soon as this hike had ended, the light that blessed them at the end of the tunnel would exit into the city Volterra…
